DISTRICT TOURISM PROMOTION COUNCIL: KHAMMAM

Khammam district is a vivid kaleidoscope of historical temples, heritage monuments, soothing lakes, rich cultures and festivities and has natural endowments in Flora and Fauna.  The District is endowed with lush green virgin forest, abundant water sources including Palair & Wyra reservoirs, rich resources of Granite, Coal are stunningly beautiful landscapes.

The District has great historical and religious sites. The famous Narsimha swamy temple in Khammam town and also Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple at Jamalapuram so called Telangana Tirupati which attracts large no. of people.  There are quite a few heritage monuments like Khammam Fort, Nelakondapalli Budha Stupa dating back to 3rd century and Kusumanchi Sivalayam of Kakatiya period which have immense potential for further development to attract visitors.

Tourist Sites

1. Palair Lake One of the huge balancing reservoir falling on the highway between Suryapet – Khammam (30 kms either way) is a major source of attraction which needs to be developed into a major tourist recreation zone with water sports, resorts, electronic gaming, suspension bridges to connect the three pieces of lands between two canals, island development etc. As this is on the highway it has immense potential to attract large no. of highways tourists / visitors
2. Kusumanchi Sivalayam Kusumanchi Sivalayam was built in 11th century by the Kaktiya kings, which has one of the biggest siva lingas, which attracts large no. of piligrims and visitors
3. Nelakondapalli Budha Stupa Nelakondapalli Budha Stupa was built in 3rd century AD, said to be one of the biggest Stupas in South India.
4. Khammam Fort Khammam Fort has checkered history build in 950 AD, continuously developed till 17th century by Qutub Shahis & Nizams.
*  As these sites are “Protected Monuments” which are under the control of Department of Heritage, Govt. of Telangana. Can be developed as Archaeological circuit by providing basic public amenities, illumination, Sound & Light show on Khammam Fort, etc.
5. Wyra Lake One of the biggest lakes, is a major source of attraction and an ideal recreation destination, which needs to be developed into a major tourist recreation zone with water sports, resorts, electronic gaming, etc.
6. Jamalapuram Temple Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple at Jamalapuram which is also known as Telangana Tirupati attracts large no. of piligrims everyday, focus needs to be given on development of public amenities, cottages etc. And also the Jamalapuram Tank needs to be developed with boating and other recreational facilities.
7. Forest Area Utilizing the natural flora & fauna, adventure tourism activities like trekking, camping in tents etc can be focused to attract adventure and nature loving tourists / visitors in the areas of Puligundala Reserve Forest.

As Khammam being the entry point for the newly formed Bhadradri-Kothagudem District, we should make use of the resources and develop more leisure & recreational facilities utilizing the major water bodies of Palair & Wyra to attract more no of tourists/ visitors.

Ongoing Projects in progress:

2 Development of Public amenities, accommodation facilities at Budha Stupa Site, Nelakondapalli Rs.1.36 lakhs sanctioned by State Govt -Telangana State Tourism Development Corp, Hyd is the executing agency
-In the process of inviting tenders
3 Development of Suspension Bridge & Musical Fountain at Lakaram Tank Bund, Khammam Rs.10 crores Khammam Municipal Corp funds -Works are executed by TSTDC, Hyd, Suspension bridge work in progress
– Musical Fountain 90 percent work is completed, daily show is in progress
